The highly polished stainless steel base distributes and supports the weight of the specimen and specimen such that the specimen remains on the base without additional support. This feature also enables a reduction in the size of the specimen splatter. This feature is not present in the transmitted light method. The bi-directional reflected/transmitted light system prevents specimen or slide contamination from ambient light and gives more control over the light conditions. Because the bi-directional light source is internally lit ambient and reflected light are switched on simultaneously. Thus specimen identification color recognition and preservation of the specimen are only needed for the transmitted light mode.
